Garbage Disposal Humming but Not Working?

You flip the switch and instead of the grind, you get a low hum — and nothing moves. That hum is actually useful information: power is reaching the motor, but the flywheel can't turn. Nine times out of ten it's jammed by something that shouldn't be in there, and the fix takes five minutes and one tool. Here's the safe sequence — and the line where the disposal stops being a DIY job.

Safety first, every time

  • Switch off, and unplug the unit or switch off its breaker before your hands go anywhere near the sink opening. A disposal that suddenly frees itself while you're investigating is a serious injury.
  • Never put your hand into the grinding chamber. Not "carefully," not "just to grab one thing." Use tongs, needle-nose pliers, or a flashlight and a wooden spoon handle to move things around.
  • If the unit has been humming on a stuck switch, turn it off and let the motor cool before working — the reset button won't behave until it does.

The fix, in order

1. Check for the obvious. With the power off and a flashlight, look into the chamber. Bottle caps, small bones, a twist tie, the measuring spoon that vanished — jams usually have a culprit you can see. Fish it out with tongs or pliers. Then restore power, run cold water, and test.

2. Free the flywheel with a hex key. Look at the very bottom of the disposal, under the sink, in the center: there's a hex-shaped socket. Fit a 1/4-inch Allen (hex) wrench — many disposals ship with one taped to the unit — and work it back and forth. You're turning the flywheel by hand, and you'll feel the jam loosen as the wrench moves more freely. Remove whatever worked loose, again with tongs.

3. Press the reset button. While you're under there: the small red (sometimes black) button on the bottom of the unit is the overload reset. When a jam stalls the motor, this trips to protect it — push it back in. Then run cold water and switch the disposal on. A healthy grind and free-spinning flywheel means you're done.

4. If there's no sound at all. Silence instead of a hum points the other way: no power, or a tripped reset. Check the reset button first, then the GFCI outlet (test/reset buttons in the kitchen), then the breaker panel. If power is confirmed everywhere and the unit is still silent and the flywheel turns freely by hex key, the motor itself is likely done — that's replacement territory.

What never to do

Never pour chemical drain cleaner into a disposal. Products like Drano sit in the chamber, splash dangerously when the unit eventually turns or is opened up, and can damage the disposal's seals and splash guards. It's on the "can I" list because everyone wonders — the answer from every pro and manufacturer is no.

Never reach in "just for a second" with the unit plugged in. Worth repeating. Tongs exist.

Don't keep flipping the switch on a humming unit. A stalled motor overheats fast; the reset protects it a few times, not indefinitely.

When it's replacement, not repair

Unjam attempts are worth about 20 minutes. Call it done — and start thinking replacement — when:

  • The flywheel won't free with the hex key, or jams again immediately on soft food.
  • It leaks from the bottom of the unit. Water coming out of the base housing (not from the sink flange or dishwasher connection above) means the internal seal has failed. Seals aren't a practical repair; the unit is done.
  • The reset keeps tripping under normal loads.
  • The body is cracked, or the unit is old and loud — grinding has gotten rougher, and it struggles with loads it used to handle easily. Disposals live a finite life, and a struggling unit failing mid-holiday-dinner is a Windsor tradition nobody enjoys.

One seasonal warning: jam and failure calls spike around Thanksgiving and Christmas cooking — grease, potato peels, and fibrous scraps in volumes the disposal never sees in July. If yours is already humming in October, don't nurse it into the holidays.

Common questions

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not spinning?
The motor has power but the flywheel is jammed — usually by a hard object (bone fragment, bottle cap, utensil) wedged between the flywheel and the grinding ring. Free it with a hex key in the socket under the unit, clear the object with tongs, and press the reset button.
Where is the reset button on a garbage disposal?
On the bottom of the unit, under the sink — a small red or black button near the center, close to the hex socket. It trips when the motor overheats or stalls. Make sure the jam is cleared and the motor has cooled before pressing it back in.
How do I unjam a garbage disposal with a hex key?
Power off first. Insert a 1/4-inch Allen wrench into the hex socket in the center of the unit's bottom and work it back and forth until the flywheel swings freely. Remove the loosened debris with tongs — never your hand — then press the reset button, run cold water, and test.
Can I put Drano in a garbage disposal?
No. Chemical drain cleaners pool in the chamber, can splash out when the unit is serviced or frees up, and damage seals and internal parts. If the jam is mechanical, chemicals can't touch it anyway. Clear it mechanically or call a pro.
When should a garbage disposal be replaced instead of repaired?
When it leaks from the bottom housing (failed internal seal), the flywheel won't free, resets keep tripping, or an aging unit is loud and weak. Jam-and-reset fixes are cheap; seal failure isn't fixable at all. A pro can confirm in one visit and swap the unit the same visit if you approve the price.

Still humming — or leaking from the base?

Call (970) 839-0039 and you will be matched with an available local pro. If it's a jam, it's a quick visit; if the unit's done, you'll get replacement options and an upfront price — and around the holidays, Windsor disposal calls are worth making early.
